The State of AI Business Accuracy Report 2026.
An independent evaluation of how accurately ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity understand real businesses — and what that means for the brands they describe.
How accurate is AI when it describes your business?
Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming one of the primary ways consumers and business buyers discover, research and evaluate companies. As AI platforms increasingly influence purchasing decisions, one question has become critically important: how accurate are they?
To answer that, LLM Listed conducted one of the largest independent evaluations of AI business accuracy to date. We tested 250 companies across 20 industries, asking the same questions to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. The companies included a mix of nationally recognised brands and randomly selected local businesses.
The results were encouraging in some areas — and concerning in others. While AI generally understands what businesses do, it frequently omits important information, struggles with local businesses, and often provides inconsistent recommendations depending on which platform is used.
The headline numbers.
AI has shifted from answering questions to shaping decisions.
The role of AI has changed dramatically. Rather than simply answering questions, AI platforms now recommend products, compare providers, summarise companies and directly influence purchasing decisions.
In our previous AI Buyer Journey Report 2026 we found that 97% of buyers trust information provided by AI, 85% have changed their mind because of an AI recommendation, and 94% would stop considering a company if AI presented negative information.
As trust grows, business accuracy becomes commercially important. Incorrect or incomplete information no longer affects only search visibility — it directly influences revenue.
AI understands businesses — but often misses details.
Overall, AI performed well when identifying the core purpose of a business. Across companies tested, AI correctly identified what a business does 92% of the time. But that high-level understanding often concealed important omissions.
Although AI broadly described products and services correctly in 86% of responses, more than a quarter failed to mention important offerings, specialist services or key product lines. If AI fails to mention one of your highest-value services, buyers may never realise you offer it.

AI platforms frequently disagree.
Perhaps the most surprising finding was the lack of consistency between platforms. Only 46% of businesses received broadly consistent recommendations across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity.
The remaining companies experienced meaningful differences in how they were described, whether they were recommended, which competitors appeared alongside them, or how their strengths and weaknesses were presented. Monitoring a single AI platform is no longer sufficient.

Local businesses face a much bigger challenge.
Local businesses are disproportionately affected. Compared with nationally recognised brands, they were four times more likely to be misunderstood. In many cases, AI struggled with specialist services, geographic coverage, business positioning, or simply lacked enough authoritative information to build an accurate understanding.
This finding highlights a significant opportunity for local businesses that invest in improving their AI visibility before competitors do.
AI optimization materially improves accuracy.
One of the clearest findings was the relationship between AEO investment and accuracy. Businesses with little or no AEO investment were 3.5x more likely to be misunderstood than those with basic AEO, and full AEO programs reduced the misunderstanding rate to just 1%.
While AEO does not guarantee perfect accuracy, businesses investing in structured content, clear entity signals, authoritative citations and comprehensive service information were significantly more likely to be understood correctly.
Pricing remains a weakness.
Pricing was one of the least reliable areas tested. When asked what companies charged, AI provided broadly reasonable generic guidance in 77% of responses. However, 23% of responses included specific pricing information — and following manual review, many of those figures appeared speculative or could not be confidently attributed to authoritative public sources.
Businesses should treat AI-generated pricing information with caution unless supported by official documentation.

Where AI gets its information.
The study also examined which sources AI platforms referenced when recommending companies. Companies' own websites remained the most commonly cited source, but third-party sources played a significant role — with Reddit emerging as one of the most influential external platforms observed.
These findings reinforce the importance of maintaining a strong digital presence beyond a company's own website. Reviews, Reddit conversations, editorial coverage and reference sources shape AI understanding just as much as owned content.

AI is also willing to score brands out of ten.
When asked for opinionated ratings, AI platforms will readily produce scores across brand, patient experience, marketing and likelihood-to-recommend. These scores flow into buyer perception whether or not businesses are aware of them.

"From what is publicly available, they appear to be a well-run, reputable, premium practice that has built a strong reputation rather than relying on flashy marketing alone."— ChatGPT, evaluating a real business
Five strategic implications.
AI Accuracy Is A Commercial Issue
As buyers increasingly rely on AI recommendations, incomplete or inaccurate information directly affects revenue. Accuracy is no longer a marketing concern — it's a revenue concern.
Consistency Matters
With only 46% cross-platform alignment, businesses must monitor ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity together — not just ChatGPT alone.
Local Businesses Need To Act
Local businesses are 4x more likely to be misunderstood. That's a threat, but also a first-mover opportunity for the local brands that invest early.
Third-Party Content Shapes AI
AI platforms build their understanding from websites, reviews, Reddit discussions, news coverage and reference sources. Owned content alone is not enough.
AEO Improves Understanding
Businesses investing in structured, authoritative content were 3.5x less likely to be misunderstood. Optimization measurably improves accuracy.
Questions this research raises.
Accuracy is the new visibility.
Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming one of the most influential business discovery channels. While today's leading AI platforms demonstrate strong understanding of basic business information, they remain inconsistent, sometimes incomplete and occasionally incorrect.
For organisations, the challenge is no longer simply appearing in AI results. It is ensuring AI platforms understand the business accurately, consistently and completely.
As AI continues to influence buying decisions, business accuracy will become as important as search visibility once was.

LLM Listed evaluated 250 businesses across 20 industries using ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. The sample included both nationally recognised brands and randomly selected local businesses. Each platform was asked a consistent set of questions covering business identity, founders, headquarters, products and services, pricing, recommendations and reputation. Responses were manually reviewed and scored for factual accuracy, completeness, consistency and evidence of source attribution.
Engineered AI visibility
LLM Listed helps businesses improve how they are understood, cited and recommended across AI platforms including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews — through AI Visibility, Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and AI reputation management.
