Your Business Has An AI Profile. You Just Didn't Create It.

AI platforms have already built a profile of your business from sources across the web. Here's what it looks like, why it matters, and how to influence it.

Your Business Has An AI Profile. You Just Didn't Create It.

Most business owners know their company has an online reputation.

They monitor Google reviews, respond to customer feedback, keep their website up to date, and occasionally check what appears when someone searches for their brand.

But there's another profile of your business that's becoming increasingly important.

    Your AI profile.

Unlike your website or your Google Business Profile, you didn't create it.

AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews have built their own understanding of your business by piecing together information from across the internet.

    They read your website.

    They read review sites.

    They read Reddit discussions.

    They read news articles.

They read directories, Wikipedia, Glassdoor, blog posts, comparison pages, and dozens of other publicly available sources.

Then they combine all of that information into a profile that determines when, where, and whether your business gets recommended.

    The problem?

You have very little control over how that profile has been built.

Every AI Platform Sees Your Business Differently

One of the biggest surprises from LLM Listed's State of AI Business Accuracy Report 2026 was how inconsistent AI platforms are.

We evaluated 250 businesses across 20 industries using ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity.

Only 46% of companies received consistent recommendations across all four platforms.

In other words, more than half of the businesses we tested were understood differently depending on which AI platform someone happened to use.

One platform might recommend a business confidently.

    Another might barely mention it.

A third might misunderstand what the company actually does.

As more consumers and business buyers use AI to research companies, those inconsistencies become increasingly important.

    AI Usually Understands The Basics

The encouraging news is that AI has become remarkably good at understanding businesses at a high level.

    Across the companies we tested:

    • AI correctly identified what a business does 92% of the time.
    • It correctly identified where a business was based 85% of the time.
    • It broadly understood products and services 86% of the time.

At first glance, those numbers look reassuring.

But they don't tell the whole story.

Understanding the basics is very different from understanding the business.

The Details Are Where Problems Begin

When we looked beyond simple business descriptions, the picture changed significantly.

Although AI generally understood what companies did, it frequently missed important information.

Our research found that 28% of responses omitted key products, services, or capabilities.

For businesses, those omissions can have real commercial consequences.

Imagine a software company that offers financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management.

If AI only recognises it as financial reporting software, it may never recommend that company when someone asks for budgeting software or forecasting tools.

    The information isn't necessarily wrong.

    It's simply incomplete.

Unfortunately, incomplete information can be just as damaging as inaccurate information when AI is deciding which businesses to recommend.

Local Businesses Face An Even Bigger Challenge

The problem becomes even more pronounced for smaller businesses.

Our research found that AI was four times more likely to misunderstand a local business than a nationally recognised brand.

Local businesses often have fewer authoritative mentions, less media coverage, and fewer third-party sources available online.

That makes it harder for AI to build a complete picture of who they are, what they do, and when they should be recommended.

For many local businesses, their AI profile may already exist.

It just may not be telling the full story.

Your AI Profile Is Constantly Evolving

Unlike a website, your AI profile isn't something you publish and forget.

It changes over time as AI platforms discover new information, reassess existing sources, and build a broader understanding of your business.

Every new article, review, customer discussion, directory listing, Reddit thread, case study, and news mention has the potential to influence how AI understands your company.

That means your AI profile is constantly evolving, whether you're actively managing it or not.

The question is whether it's evolving in the right direction.

Can You Improve Your AI Profile?

    The good news is yes.

Our research found that businesses with little or no Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) were 3.5 times more likely to be misunderstood by AI platforms.

While there is no single ranking factor that guarantees accurate AI recommendations, businesses that communicate clearly and consistently are significantly more likely to be understood correctly.

    That includes:

    • Clearly explaining every product and service you offer.
    • Creating dedicated pages for specialist services and industries.
    • Keeping company information accurate and consistent across trusted websites.
    • Earning authoritative mentions from industry publications and respected third-party sources.
    • Building genuine customer reviews and reputation signals.
    • Regularly checking how major AI platforms describe your business.

The goal isn't simply to appear in AI responses.

It's to ensure AI understands your business well enough to recommend it for the right customers and the right questions.

Why This Matters More Every Month

Consumers and business buyers are increasingly turning to AI before they visit a website or contact a supplier.

    They're asking questions like:

    • Which software is best for my business?
    • Who is the best accountant for construction companies?
    • Which marketing agency specialises in healthcare?
    • What law firm should I use for a personal injury claim?

AI is increasingly acting as the first filter.

If your AI profile is incomplete, outdated, or inaccurate, your business may never make the shortlist.

That's why managing your AI profile is quickly becoming as important as managing your website, your online reviews, and your search visibility.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is an AI profile?

An AI profile is the understanding that platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews have built about your business using publicly available information from across the web.

Where does AI get information about my business?

AI platforms use a wide range of sources, including your website, review platforms, news articles, Reddit discussions, directories, Wikipedia, industry publications, and other authoritative websites.

Can I control my AI profile?

You cannot edit AI responses directly, but you can influence how AI understands your business by improving the quality, consistency, and authority of the information available online.

Why do different AI platforms describe my business differently?

Our research found that only 46% of companies received consistent recommendations across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity. Each platform retrieves, weights, and interprets information differently, which can lead to different descriptions and recommendations.

How can I check my AI profile?

The easiest way is to ask the major AI platforms the same questions your customers would ask and compare the answers. This often reveals inconsistencies, missing services, or outdated information that may affect your visibility.
